On a chilly, dismal Saturday, Jack took us ladies, Liz, Anna, and I, out to dinner at Smith Commons on H St! Jack, always the gentleman, dropped us off at the door to go find parking. So of course we got started with a few drinks while we waited for him to return.
They had a medium to small beer list, but the beers their selection was awesome!
I started off with the Brother Thelonius by North Coast Brewing Co of Fort Bragg, CA at 9.4% abv.
North Coast Brewing Co had partnered with the Thelonius Monk Institute of Jazz and depicted Thelonius Monk on the label as an abbey monk since it’s a Belgian Strong Dark Ale. Proceeds from every bottle sold goes to the Thelonius Monk Institute of Jazz. All this I learned from visiting their website, since I was curious about their label art.
Caramel malts make this beer chewy and sweet, bready, dark fruits, cloves and bananas. Almost a hint of tobacco? But not unpleasant, really comes to life as it warms. Alcohol is well hidden.
Next I ordered The Palo Santo Marron, which they had on draft, by Dogfish Head Brewery of Milton, DE at 12% abv.
What a beer! So complex, there’s a lot going on here. Roasted malts give it they exceptionally dark appearance, full mouthfeel, caramel sweetness, molasses, wood earthiness and vanilla. Creamy and thick with subtle chocolate. And at 12% its definitely a beer to go slow with! I had this as my dessert!
